Arsenal's season - a huge disappointment or the dawn of a new era?

It is rather ironic I start out with our first ever newsletter editorial at the point most Arsenal fans would consider the end of our season, figuratively speaking of course. That is, barring a miracle of bigger proportions than the Immaculate Conception, Arsenal will now find it impossible to obtain any silverware this season.

Listening to many Gooners over the past few weeks it would seem Arsenal had hit an all time low and were about to be relegated. Half a dozen players should be turfed out during the summer transfer window and Monsieur Wenger himself ought to be sacked!

Fortunately not all fans are so fickle and the majority of us understand that sometimes trophies aren’t the most important accolade a season can bring. Of course they are nice, and we all know that only winners are remembered, but I’d like to think this year we have seen something never witnessed before at Arsenal or indeed in football history. In fact Arsené Wenger himself has come out and publicly stated that Arsenal may look back on their troubled campaign and realise it was the defining moment which built a great side. And I happen to agree.

So while the harbingers of doom ponder who to sell Henry to and line up their fantasy football replacements, I am quite happy to accept that this year has, so far, been a remarkable achievement for a squad that has replaced almost all of their first 11 "Legends" that won them a double in 2002 & went 49 games unbeaten in between May 2003 - October 2004.

But I must agree that next season we have no such luxury as an excuse. It will be time for our young side to mature and come of age. I do however believe collectively they have the ability and mental strength to achieve this and I am already eagerly anticipating next season. Of course there is still some exciting football ahead this season and We must secure 3rd place and hope to catch Chelsea in 2nd.

What do you think? Email your comments to admin@arsenalcommunity.co.uk and we'll publish a selection of your responses in next week’s newsletter.

'Til next week,
Gawain,
Fan Community Admin & Editor.

Transfer rumours start early: Henry to Inter?

Inter Milan have put Thierry Henry on their summer hit-list of transfer targets as the big-spending Italians believe they can lure the Arsenal captain to Serie A. To read more here: Click here

Wenger outlines summer transfer plans

Wenger maintains he is only looking to make a couple of new acquisitions, and only if the right players become available.
"Maybe one or two maximum - and only super, super class because we have what is needed," he explained.
"If someone is available I would always try to improve my team - but the basis is inside the club." Read the full story here

Lehmann expected to sign new Arsenal contract.

Arsene Wenger is confident Jens Lehmann will put pen-to-paper on a new contract.
The German goalkeeper is out of contract at the end of the season and talks over a new deal appear to be making slow progress. Get involved and share your opinions on Lehmann as first choice keeper: here

However it has also emerged Hertha Berlin have tabled a two-year contract offer to Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann. You can read that story here.

Aston Villa 0 - 1 Arsenal (Wed 14th March, 07)

Aston Villa's woeful recent record against Arsenal continued after going down to a 1-0 defeat at Villa Park thanks to Abou Diaby's fortunate goal. Julio Baptista's harmless shot was troubling no-one until it struck Diaby and nestled its way into the net, giving The Gunners a lead they would not lose.

The win moves Arsenal ahead of Liverpool into third in the Premiership while Villa's dismal run against the North Londoners now stretches to 17 games without a win. Click here for the full match report & photos

Preview: Everton vs Arsenal (Sun 18th March 07 - 16:00 Kick Off)

Arse
nal travel to Goodison park on Sunday, looking to extend their lead over Liverpool in third place. Arsenal's recent league performance form has been excellent having picked up 19 out of a possible 21 points since the beginning of the year. However goal shy Arsenal have a host of injuries to worry about prior to Sunday's match, with Henry being added to the long-term injury list. Click here for the Everton match build up

First choice starting 11

Although this isn't a new forum topic, it's still rumbling on and will continue to for some time yet.

In a perfect world, with no injuries or suspensions, who would be your first choice Arsenal XI? You can view other members' choices here, and add your own for good measure: So who's made it?

New Away Kit

Major forum contributor 'LooneyGooner' shocked us all this week with a mock-up of what is rumoured to be Arsenal's new away kit for next season. Of course I still believe it is a fake, but other rumours are circulating that our next away kit will be more like the "Lillywhite's" home shirt than a traditional away shirt. See what's causing the unrest with Gooner fans

Most Hated Referees

The men in black, the guys we loathe to hate. Premiership referees are under attack once again after some predictably shocking treatment against our beloved Arsenal this season.

Our members have gone on the offensive and have been voting for their worst referee of the year. Who's yours? Graham "3 cards" poll, Mike "bottle job" Riley or Rob "the amateur" Styles? Find out and vote here

We sort of Welcome Kop104 to the forums, I say sort of because he's a Liverpool fan and his first contribution was to ask how many tickets we got for PSV away so he can assess his chances of getting a ticket for the next round. A blatant attack, or a genuine request? I'll let you guys decide.

Match Day Meet back to top

Arsenal vs West Ham (Sat 7th April 2007, 15:00 Kick Off)

So it's that time again to arrange yet another match day meet (any excuse for a piss up is fine by me). We're planning on using the Rocket after my first visit recently (see here for a review).

It has also just been agreed (by unanimous decision) that the next meet will fall on the West Ham home match (see above for match details). Unfortunately all tickets for this fixture are sold out. If you still require a ticket email me ASAP, no promises but I will do what I can. If you don't have a ticket, but still want to come - please do, the more the merrier.
Register for the meet & get a free pint!

Disclaimer: Arsenal Fans Community does not assume and cannot be responsible for any liability for the accuracy of the information below.

A very good but a little piece of a very rare and generally unknown fact for you.

Arsenal never played under the name Dial Square.

What? I hear you say.

Strange but true. For their first few games, being that they were only friendlies, they didn't actually have a name, Dial square was adopted in retrospect purely for the record books. It's too late and I've drunk far too much vodka to be bothered to prove it, but I will provide evidence if you don't believe me. Personally I'd rather you try and prove me wrong (it's easier for me), but delve and you will find!

Don't believe him? Got something to say? Email us here

Spot the Ball contest

We recently launched a Spot the Ball contest on the forum for fun and are thinking of rolling this out as a monthly competition. For just £2 ($4) entrants get the chance to select on an Arsenal photo where they think the ball originally was before it was masterfully edited out. Winners will win cash prizes or Arsenal merchandise (including signed pictures) each month and a percentage of entry fees will be donated to our nominated charity (to be shortly announced).
