Julio Baptista - Caged animal, or harmless pussycat?
This weeks editorial is sure to divide many Gooners, but as this is only our second newsletter I am hoping to invoke response from Arsenal fans across the globe. Over the last few weeks, I've heard one player more than any other take a lot of critisicm for the way we have been playing recently, Julio Baptista.
Julio (affectionately known as the 'Beast' for his physical size and style of play) transferred to Arsenal from Real Madrid in a deadline day loan deal in August 2006, which also saw José Antonio Reyes head in the other direction, following his frank admission of home sickness (that is another issue entirely).
Baptista has had a difficult season to date, struggling to get into the first team ahead of a host of strikers and attacking midfielders. However we have seen glimpses of the magic he possesses when he, single handedly, ripped apart Liverpool at Anfield in the Carling cup; scoring 4 goals to give Arsenal an emphatic 6-3 victory, one of Liverpool's biggests home defeats for more than 50 years.
So at a time when Arsenal heads are down and the fans unleash a barrage of (sometimes unfair) critisicm, I seek to unearth exactly why Julio is shouldering so much abuse. Does he really lack the product of a first class Arsenal striker? Should he be duly returned to sender? (regardless of Reyes' situation) or can he turn it all around? We of course still have the remainder of the season to find out, but at what expense?
One thing is for sure, Baptista isn't soley to blame for our recent performances (or lack of them), the team has been pretty sub-standard across all areas. Being an on loan player, it's easy to point the finger at someone who can be gotten rid of at the click of the finger in hope of signing someone with better quality. But the truth is many of our established players are as guilty if not more so of being caught in possession, giving away the ball too easily and generally not putting in the required effort. In fact Baptista has to be one of the most committed players on the field of play during almost any recent match he's been called up to play in. But is commitment enough?
Personally I believe Baptista has potential, and masses of ability. He's been troubled with consitency, which I feel is due to a lack of match time, having only been handed a small selection of matches (before recent injuries). I believe if fans get off his back, start cheering for him and show belief, the Beast will come good and start to repay that faith. Berating someone and screaming abuse at them during a match doesn't help anything, we need to support our players through the low times! After all how many other players failed to fulfill their potential early on in an Arsenal shirt? Gilberto, Henry even Pires struggled to gel with the squad upon first arrival.
So what do you think? Did Wenger get it wrong this time, is Baptista on the end of an unfair hate campaign, can he turn it all around and win over the fans or will the jury always be out on him now? Email your comments to admin@arsenalcommunity.co.uk and we'll publish a selection of your responses in next week’s newsletter.
Your view: Fans believe it's the dawn of a new era
Last week we asked if you thought the current campaign had been a complete disaster, or whether the season had shown a glimpse of the success Arsenal may achieve with their young squad.
Unsuprisingly being our first newsletter, we didn't receive too many responses to the question. The comments we did receive generally supported our opinion and rubbished the doom-mongers who called for massive action (selling Henry & sacking Wenger).
Mike from Texas agreed with Wenger's view of this season being the 'defining moment which built a great side.' Mike said, "I could not agree [with Wenger] more, this is going to be one season that I will always remember. It has been bitter sweet" Mike also went on to highlight the youngsters' remarkable achievement in reaching the Carling Cup final against a first team Chelsea and almost winning it. Something the majority of responses echoed.
Forum member Rocky Rocastle reminded us "Arsene Wenger has never reached the Carling Cup final before, soley due to always fielding a weaker XI, however this year's weaker XI seem to be stronger than 90% of Premiership opposition." A valid point Rocky.
So it seems the majority of our newsletter readers are optimistic for the future, let's just hope we can get to the end of this season in one piece, pick up 3rd position and get some players the all important experience they've been missing.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to share their opinions, hopefully as the popularity of the newsletter grows, so will the amount and diversity of responses. |

Fabregas - Why we can win the title next season
The Spaniard has grown accustomed to title run-ins and Cup Finals and admits that it has been difficult to adjust since Arsenal lost the Carling Cup Final and exited the FA Cup and Champions League in quick succession.
"It is strange, not the atmosphere at the training ground but inside yourself," Fabregas told media reporters . "Everyone feels there is something missing. When you are out of three cups and you just have the league to fight for, but you are so far behind the leaders, you think it is not the best of seasons." Read the rest here
French sensation in Summer Gunners move
Arsenal have struck a deal that will see French teenager Gilles Sunu move to Emirates Stadium on a four-year contract in the summer.
The Gunners won the race for the highly-rated Chateauroux striker, beating Premiership rivals Liverpool in the process, But now Sunu has turned 16, it has been confirmed that the French youth international will continue his footballing education under Arsene Wenger in North London after the two clubs came to an agreement. Important fixture changes
Arsenal have had four matches re-arranged to allow for televised broadcasting. Both the Newcastle and Tottenham away fixtures have been moved as well as the home games against Fulham and Chelsea.

Everton 1 - 0 Arsenal (Wed 14th March, 07)
A last minute goal from Andy Johnson gave Everton an impressive 1-0 win over Arsenal, in an otherwise mediocre game, that marked David Moyes' fifth anniversary at Goodison Park in a manner that will delight the Scot.
Everton will feel they were the better of the two sides and allied to Johnson's last gasp winner, a pair of efforts that crashed back off Arsenal's woodwork, one in each half, bare testimony to such a suggestion.
Arsenal look as though they are still suffering a hangover from crashing out of three cup competitions in 11 days and while their disappointment is understandable, Arsene Wenger is unlikely to tolerate such a lethargic performance. Click here for the full match report & photos
Domestic break for International
Forgive me for sounding unpatriotic but it's that time again where the top-flight domestic game comes to a standstill so England can fly to one of the most hostile places on earth, Israel.
I suppose at least this time it's a qualifier for the Euro 2008 competition and not another poxy friendly, so I will be watching and rooting on the boys in hope we'll have a Summer of football to look forward to next year.
In the meantime Arsenal's next game, at Anfield versus Liverpool in the Premier League, will be previewed in next week's newsletter. Come on England! |

Negative attitiudes
We ran a cover story last week on the Gooners who were, let's say, a little dissatisfied with their team this season. LooneyGooner once more sourced the net to find us a piece from a 'fan' that seems to have quite an anger management problem. Our members responded with vengence. Have your say
New Away Kit (continued)
This topic just won't lie down at the moment. It appears someone has got creative and photoshopped an away shirt prototype to whet our appetites for how the new kit might look. Once again the fans are split in their decision of this design. We must emphasise it's an impression only and does not represent the actual shirt for next season. See it for yourself
Wrighty never replaced?
"What's needed at Arsenal" received a mixed bag of responses.
"We need another Ian Wright" was the point in discussion. Someone to bag goals from inside the penalty area and doesn't care how he gets them. But do we have enough strikers, Who would make way, and could they fit into Wenger's plans? What do you think? |

March 23rd: Today was the day...
the Gunners didn't need Henry.
On this day in 2004, Arsenal were fearing the worst without the suspended Thierry Henry for their FA Cup sixth round replay against Newcastle. But they needn’t have worried, they stormed the match 3-0 at Highbury, with 2 goals in the opening 9 minutes.
Even more interesting however, is only 1 player in that side which lined up for the Gunners (just 3 years ago) is still currently playing for Arsenal today - Freddy Ljungberg.

Winners will win cash prizes or Arsenal merchandise (including signed pictures) each month and a percentage of entry fees will be donated to our nominated charity (to be shortly announced).
